The Management Roots of the Armed Forces

When B Schools were non-existent, Armed Forces personnel filled the gaps. The concepts of management emanated from the Armed Forces. Contrary to the commonly held belief, quite a few of the Armed Forces personnel are also academically qualified to hold any post, be it technical or managerial, in the corporate world.

Soldiering is basically teamwork. Every soldier, whether trained in a technical or specialized subject or not, is proficient in the following:-

(a) Drill

This is not a ceremonial show only but in essence, a training in coordinated and synchronized activity.

(b) Physical Training (PT)

Makes one physically fit which in turn enables one to undertake prolonged and stressful activities without losing efficiency.

(c) Weapon Training

Imparts ability to use various weapons, strip, assemble and maintain those thus enabling a soldier to handle confidently and effectively equipments and gadgets usually needed for efficient functioning. It also trains to anticipate failures and change plans accordingly.

(d) Field Craft

Though seemingly absurd, assessment of an unknown or unexpected situation and cohesive functioning is a direct byproduct of this training.

(e) Battle Procedures & Battle Drills

These are essentially laid down procedures to be followed in known or anticipated situations to streamline activities. Enables creation of templates for assorted situations and activities
